Amidst the war-torn ruins of Mosul in June 2017, my colleague, photographer Kate Geraghty, and I found ourselves in the field headquarters of coalition forces, surrounded by approximately 50 elite Iraqi soldiers. The atmosphere, charged with the imminent victory over the Islamic State, should have elicited elation. However, an underlying sense of irritation lingered even before the arrival of two uneasy American privates into our tent.
