Chronicles from Mosul: Betrayal Amidst War and Unraveling IS Threats

Amidst the war-torn ruins of Mosul in June 2017, my colleague, photographer Kate Geraghty, and I found ourselves in the field headquarters of coalition forces, surrounded by approximately 50 elite Iraqi soldiers. The atmosphere, charged with the imminent victory over the Islamic State, should have elicited elation. However, an underlying sense of irritation lingered even before the arrival of two uneasy American privates into our tent.

As we sat with these courageous soldiers, sharing jokes and relishing sweet watermelon, the impending triumph to reclaim Mosul block by block from IS seemed palpable. Yet, an unexpected turn of events was about to shatter the camaraderie we had come to cherish in the field.

The tent, once a haven for camaraderie, became a stage for betrayal. The details of that fateful encounter and the unraveling of trust form a riveting account that underscores the complexity of human dynamics amidst the chaos of war. Join us as we delve into the intricacies of this harrowing experience, exploring the layers of emotion, camaraderie, and the stark realities of a conflict-ridden Mosul.
